In the Beginning….
by claire
I’ve just been away working for Dungog Film Festival. The Festival was great, and not because I had any work showing, but surrounded by so many short filmmakers, actors and hopefuls, it made me realise a few important things.
I’ve always worked on my projects, short films or writing, in quite a personal capacity, and have never really pushed myself to put anything “out there”. It is quite a leap, to have enough faith in your projects, or in yourself to peddle them.
I always felt that this was pretentious, or arrogant. Self assuming and extravagant. But after my time at Dungog Film Festival I’ve realised that you immeadiately negate anyone’s interest or enjoyment in your hard work if it is never there in the first place. This sounds like such a simple realisation, but you really have to hammer this in to yourself until you are ready to accept this!
While I was at Dungog Film Festival, my first little baby project was shown at Newtown Flicks. Iris is an experimental short I completed last year at UTS, with the very talented Katharine Richardson! While Newtown Flicks is just a little film festival in Sydney’s inner city, it still gives you a queer thrill to have a piece of work on public display, external of yourself.
So, I will begin to enter my films into festivals, my writing into competitions – And most importantly I am going to blog!!! Times have changed. So watch this space!
